Years ago, the only way you could buy video games was by obtaining a physical copy, which includes a plastic box with a CD or DVD inside along with some extra stuff like a couple of stickers or a small guide.
Since then, times have changed and the majority of video game purchases are now digital. Some publishers, like Xbox for example, don't even release their biggest first-party games on discs.
Recently released Hellblade 2 comes as an example of a major AAA first-party game that only launched digitally. And while some publishers are pushing more towards such a trend, Capcom are going in the opposite direction.
The company confirmed in the recent shareholders Q and A that they have no plans that include getting rid of physical video games. Capcom said that the demand for physical games is still high which is why they will continue manufacturing boxed copies.
"Given that a significant number of end users demand physical games we currently do not expect to eliminate physical products," Capcom said.
Capcom didn't share any numbers like the split between physical and digital sales for their games but we assume it's probably much closer than one may think, given that the publisher are pretty adamant about supporting physical moving forward.
This will be great news for the collectors and those who simply prefer to have a hard copy of the game, instead of something that is invisibly stored somewhere on the server. It will certainly be interesting to watch if the physical games makes a big return, similar to how vinyls made a comeback in music.
I'm not really hopeful of such a massive return as it's only a matter of time before we get digital-only consoles but fingers crossed. Weirder things have happened.
