Call of Duty: Modern Warfare leak suggested that the sequel for the game may be the last CoD current-gen receives along with the new operators and Warzone integration.
Consoles' generational shift is already underway and it seems like Activision may be among the first to plan to move forward with just one more Call of Duty in plans for current-gen. According to a leak supposedly acquired through social engineering, codename CoD: Modern Warfare 2020 is the next instalment in the series and will be the last one for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
While the supposed devs didn't specifically say last-gen won't get more titles, the quote was it is "hopefully the last game [they] have to do for current-gen".
Since CoD games are released in later halves of the year, the game will be preceded with some Warzone updates, one of which will include the previously leaked operators Soap MacTavish and Shane Sparks. The duo is expected to join the roster in late January or early February 2021 according to the leak.
When the new Modern Warfare launches, however, it is expected to have instant Warzone integration which was not the case with Black Ops Cold War. One of the reasons for this may be that the developers could reuse numerous textures which cut the development time significantly.
That said, the multiplayer maps will be altered to visually reflect the state of the world in the game's campaign but the functionality should remain the same.
