Four months after Call of Duty Black Ops 4 launched, Treyarch and Activision have decided to add more microtransactions to the game, this time in form of loot boxes. They are called Reserve Boxes and can be bought with 200 COD points.

Call of Duty Black Ops 4's new update dropped on 19 February 2019 for PlayStation 4 and it added a lot of fresh content to Blackout, Multiplayer and Zombies modes along with some new weapons and camos.

Operation Grand Heist was introduced as one of the biggest additions to Call of Duty Black Ops 4 since the launch, and while it certainly has a lot to offer, the good has been overshadowed by loot boxes that Treyarch and Activision silently added back to Call of Duty series.

Each loot box or Reserve Crate how Treyarch call them costs 200 COD points or $1.99 in real-world money. Crates include three different items such as weapon camos, warpaints and outfits.

However, players also noticed that loot boxes can drop new signature weapons. One of these weapons is MKII gun versions which provide a 25 per cent XP boost per kill. It's safe to say that this didn't go well with Call of Duty Black Ops 4 players on and Social Media.

What's even worse is that Black Ops 4's loot boxes do not display the drop rates for Legendary items like some other shooters. For example, Respawn's new free to play battle royale Apex Legends also has loot boxes but it reveals the probabilities for high-end loot.

Another thing that infuriated players are duplicates. Even though Black Ops 4's loot boxes can be bought with real-world money they still can drop items that players already own, unlike Apex Legends' loot boxes which only drop new items.

In addition to buying them with real money, players can obtain loot boxes by playing Multiplayer or Blackout modes but these Crates only include a single item. For every two hours of playtime, players can earn one loot box.

Considering that Call of Duty Black Ops 4 is a $60 title that offers a $50 season pass and already has a couple of other ways for monetisation, the decision to introduce loot boxes feels like a slap in a face, to the same community that once praised Black Ops 4's Contraband system.
