Cairn’s On the Trail DLC arrives this summer with new climbing areas, water soloing mechanics and a playable character option.

On the Trail is the name of a free DLC expansion Cairn will receive this summer. Today developer The Game Bakers announced the new update will include new areas to explore, new mechanics, and gameplay options.

It is confirmed players will see On the Trail rolled out in multiple updates rather than added all at once. Cairn originally launched last month to excellent reviews across the board.

Since release the climbing-centric survival game has already reached over 500,000 copies sold. With On the Trail coming this summer, players can look forward to more options when climbing and exploring.

Alongside the promise of more areas and routes to discover, players will be able to experiment with water soloing. Acting as an entirely new climbing mechanic, players will be able to attempt routes above water.

Failure won’t mean instant death when taking on routes near water, providing more opportunities to experiment with solutions.Players will unlock three new areas focused around a “legendary climber”.

Naturally players can expect new locations to explore vertically, as well as obstacles using the aforementioned water mechanics. Finally, players will be able to climb as Marco, the agent assisting Aava on her expedition. Being able to play as Marco on expeditions will shift up the typical progression, such as climbing Mt. Kami.

Marco will provide players with a new way to experience the journey should they choose to play as him. On the Trail is available now on PS5 and PC, but players should note some technical issues on console.

The overall consensus among reviewers is Cairn excels at its core climbing systems, but falters slightly with some performance issues. On the Trail promises to add even more to those systems while not drastically changing anything. Hopefully any future technical improvements can come alongside these major content updates.
