Respawn Entertainment seem to be pushing all the right buttons with Apex Legends and according to the company, it soon won't matter whether they're PC, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One buttons as the game will support cross-play between the three.
Apex Legends' lead producer Drew McCoy officially confirmed that the company are planning for cross-play between the three major platforms. There's no exact date as of yet but knowing Respawn, it shouldn't take long.
That being said, Apex Legends will not come with cross-progression, i.e. your in-game progress will still be locked to the platform you downloaded it on. Same goes for cross-purchases and McCoy explained that this is due to how Respawn set up the game up early on.
Sony obviously softened up their stance on cross-play after Sweeney and Co's Fortnite intervention but cross-purchases are a whole 'nother matter. We somehow don't see them compromising their profits without an adequate inter-platform system that would take care of this, but I digress.
Even though most fans were expecting Respawn to announce development or share progress on Titanfall 3 in their live stream, the studio pulled a sneaky one and actually launched Apex Legends, much to everyone's surprise.
After all, we're all used to games being announced, hyped, overhyped, early accessed, etc., so we won't hide our delight at how Apex Legends landed - the old school way.
McCoy is well aware of this too but there was more thought put into this than you'd think. "We're doing a free to play game, with essentially loot boxes, after we were bought by EA, and it's not Titanfall 3. It's the perfect recipe for a marketing plan to go awry, so why have that - let's just ship the game and let players play", he said.

Well, it's hard to argue with that and judging by the early responses, Apex Legends is heading for a seriously bright future. The launched version seems to be running pretty smooth too, again something that not many studios seem to be capable of today.
