Respawn's Apex Legends quickly rose to the top of the battle royale world and quickly descended from the throne but it didn't go into obscurity as the franchise is still making the big bucks for EA.
Apex Legends was released in a never seen before fashion when EA and Respawn Entertainment seemingly just announced the game and launched it in the same evening, free of charge. As weird as a free to play game sounds in the same sentence as Electronic Arts, it sounded weirder back in February 2018 when it happened.
Still, that didn't stop the game from becoming a major cash cow for the company since its population numbers exploded overnight, quickly reaching 50 million players. However, it seemed like the candle was burning on both sides as Apex quickly lost a large number of players and it stopped being the #1 game to watch on Twitch.
Even though it's not up there with Epic Games' giant, Fortnite, Apex Legends is making a lot of money for EA. In their financial results conference, the company noted that the game is "on track to become [their] latest billion-dollar franchise by the end of the fiscal year".
This means Apex Legends is projected to earn more than one billion US dollars in its lifetime before April 2021 since EA's fiscal year ends on March 31, 2021.
The company is looking to bolster the big earnings from current games by releasing six new games on the next-gen consoles in the next fiscal year, including a new Need for Speed, Battlefield, FIFA, Madden, NHL and one more unannounced game.
