According to Respawn's announcement, Steam, Switch and cross-play all arrive in fall 2020. The wording and common sense suggest they'll be launching at the same time, but we'll still be double-checking that just in case, so stay tuned.
"EA is doing a massive push to bring their games to make it easier for players to play with their friends, regardless of which platform they own. We're very excited that players will be able to drop into the Arena on Steam this fall. And it gets even better. We're huge Nintendo fans at Respawn, so we're thrilled to announce that Apex Legends will be launching this autumn on Switch as well", the dev wrote.
Now, we've been waiting on EA to put a date on Apex Legends' Steam launch ever since they announced the return to GabeN's platform. The publisher already ported Battlefield V for instance, but Respawn's battle royale is their main shooter for this year after all, so we'll have to wait a bit longer.
Respawn talked about cross-play almost from the beginning, so while it's definitely great news, it's not much of a surprise. Nintendo Switch version of Apex Legends, on the other hand, is somewhat of a surprise, the good kind of course, as the player pool will get a hefty boost.
That said, one of the hurdles to cross-play becoming the norm, rather than a feature most fire up when they want to play friends, is the control scheme. Throwing mouse & keyboard with gamepads isn't likely to result in level playing field, so we guess we'll have to wait and see how it goes.
