Well, it's not exactly every launch that you have three updates lined up even before the darn thing is out, but Insomniac's Spider-Man is already winning hearts, minds and analyst predictions, not to mention the wallets of faithful fans.
The news comes from NPD's Analyst Mat Piscatella, whose estimates weren't quite plucked out of thin air. Namely, in one of his more recent tweets he mentions that Spider-Man: The Movie came in fourth in 2002, while its successor came in fifth in 2004 and it's obvious that people just love radioactive spider people. On screen, that is.
Now, Insomniac Games' Spider-Man is getting rave reviews already, suggesting it's at least twice the game compared to any of its predecessors, an opinion which not even puddle-gate could sway. As far as superheroes with the power of PS4 exclusivity go though, Spidey should be king.
Piscatella estimates that Insomniac Games will have their best selling launch moth, beating in the process their record launch of Resistance 2 in November of 2008. Just in case you've been living under an Xbox, the studio's also famous for the Ratchet and Clank franchise, another PS4 exclusive.
Unfortunately for Spider-Man though, and there had to be at least one point that ruined his prediction-party, Spidey's new showing is still expected to trail Batman: Arkham on the best-sellers chart and the best debut month for comic-based IP. Basically, Batman's detective work helps us realise just why multi-platform releases should be the norm.
As for the updates, once you've installed Spider-Man, you'll be met with Update 1.02, 2.03 and and 1.04. The latter two are apparently reserved for some unnamed bug fixes but the 1.02 has quite a few goodies in there.
1.02 brings the photo mode, which is apparently a blast to use. There has been some rebalancing of suit mods as well as an added suit power feature to the velocity suit. Of course, that means you'll have to wait a bit more until your Spider-Man is up and running but photo mode alone should make it worth it.
