You had to be living under a breathtaking rock not to have heard about Age of Empires' highly anticipated comeback but the game's creative director Adam Isgreen insists that this is no comeback, as the game still has a nice playerbase.

Well, nice considering that it's been a while since the last Age of Empires instalment, almost 15 years in fact, but the strategy's playerbase has proven to be quite resilient.

"We have over a million people a month playing Age of Empires games, and the numbers keep going up", Isgreen told PCGamesN recently.

The increase can easily be linked to Microsoft's E3 announcement of the remaster of legendary Wololo simulator Age of Empires 2, not to mention the highly anticipated AoE 4, but even one million players monthly is a respectable figure all things considered.

Nevertheless, Isgreen thinks that popularity has more to do with the demand for brainier games, rather than just missing the good ol' times.

"It can't just be nostalgia, right? There are new people coming into the franchise and playing it, and I think the interesting thing is that for a lot of RTS games, I think there is a pent-up demand – and the numbers seem to back this - for more 'thinking games', the games that require you to plan and strategise and think", he said.

It's hard to argue with that as the real-time strategy genre hasn't exactly been booming as of late, which wasn't always the case, although there are some notable titles coming up like Iron Harvest for instance.

At the same time, we've got remakes of Warcraft 3 and Command & Conquer: Red Alert coming up, and with the addition of Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition you'll be feeling young in no time for sure.
