22cans has today confirmed that Masters of Albion will release on PC via Steam on Wednesday, 22 April 2026 at 18:00 BST. Developed by Peter Molyneux and ex-Director of Development studio 22cans, along with former senior creative talent who have worked on Dungeon Keeper and Fable, Masters of Albion is described as a brand new reimagining of the god game for the modern era.
Masters of Albion combines elements of strategy, simulation, town management and real-time defence, with players taking on the role of a god over the land of Albion, guiding settlements and citizens, and deciding the fate of the world. Towns can be customised freely and without structure, with no timers on building - all construction is instant, and players are able to create and experiment with their settlement however they like.
Each town can be organically customised in any way the player wants, with a strong emphasis on choice and player expression. Players also have access to a variety of powerful god powers, through which they can manipulate the world, possess characters, reward or punish citizens, and unleash devastating powers.
Balancing this god power is the player’s own sense of responsibility and morality, which are also strong themes in the game. The player can also possess heroes, workers and animals within Albion and explore the world - fighting quests, discovering lore, crafting gear, and delving into underground locations.
But when night falls, Albion becomes a different place. Enemies rise up from the shadows and players must be prepared to defend their town. Defensive structures, hiring heroes, chokepoints, and strategic positioning become crucial, along with combat abilities and god powers.
Narratively, Masters of Albion is set in an Albion during its industrial revolution, a time where the mechanical future of progress is at odds with a troubled magical past.
This duality in Albion not only defines its tone, but is at the heart of the game’s identity as a fantasy, as players engage in creativity and a sense of calm during the day and fend off threats during the night.
Masters of Albion is described as a culmination of Molyneux’s entire life and career, an attempt to bring the god game genre back to life with a modern approach of deep systems, freedom of choice and expression, and an active world driven by the player’s choice and consequences.
Players can wishlist the game now ahead of its release on 22 April 2026, and is available exclusively on Steam.
