Fast travel in Mortal Shell 2 comes in two flavours. The first is available from the very start but involves a detour through Marrow Keep every single time. The second is far more convenient, but you'll need to earn it first.

Mortal Shell 2 is a souls-like action RPG developed by Cold Symmetry, and like most games in the genre, getting around its interconnected world efficiently matters a great deal. The game has two distinct methods of fast travel, and understanding how each one works will save you a significant amount of backtracking as the map opens up.

How early fast travel works

From the very beginning of the game, after the opening tutorials, you'll be introduced to Mortal Shell 2's fast travel through a spectacularly animated sequence at the top of Marrow Keep. A fast elevator carries you up, and from the platform at the summit you can select any beacon you've previously visited and travel to it directly. The animation itself is genuinely one of the more impressive fast travel presentations in recent memory.

The catch in the early game is that this platform can only be reached from Marrow Keep itself. That means that if you want to travel anywhere, you first need to return to Marrow Keep. To do that, interact with any beacon out in the world and select the option to return to Marrow Keep. From there, head to the top of the Keep, step onto the platform, and you can then select your destination from the list of beacons you have activated so far.

It works, but it adds an extra step to every journey. Marrow Keep becomes a mandatory waypoint for all travel until you unlock the proper fast travel system.

How to unlock full fast travel with Mether's Breath

The full fast travel system becomes available once you unlock Mether's Breath. To get it, you need to contribute Ova to Marrow Keep. Ova is earned by cleansing beacons out in the world: if a beacon is corrupted, the option to cleanse it will appear at the top of the beacon menu when you interact with it.

Standard beacons reward one or three Ova upon cleansing, while cleansing a beacon immediately after defeating a major boss can yield twenty or more in a single go. Once you have accumulated enough Ova, Mether's Breath is added to your beacon menu automatically.

Based on firsthand experience, Mether's Breath is unlocked after contributing ten Ova, though a lower total may be sufficient depending on the order in which you cleanse beacons.

Using Mether's Breath to fast travel

Once Mether's Breath is in your beacon menu, proper fast travel is available from any beacon in the world, with no detour through Marrow Keep required. Interact with any beacon and select the Mether's Breath option. Use L1 and R1 to cycle between the game's regions, then select any beacon you have previously unlocked within that region. Confirm the selection and you will be transported there directly. The elaborate flying animation from Marrow Keep is absent here, but the result is the same: instant travel to your chosen destination with none of the extra steps.

Quick tip: Even after unlocking Mether's Breath, the Marrow Keep platform remains available if you want to use it. For players who enjoy the animation, nothing stops you from returning to the Keep the old-fashioned way and departing from the top as before.
