Corruption blocks off large portions of the map in Mortal Shell 2, and the ability to clear it isn't handed to you at the start. You'll need to put in some work at the beacons before those blocked paths open up.

Mortal Shell 2 is a souls-like action RPG from Cold Symmetry that rewards thorough exploration, but early on you'll run into corrupted walls scattered throughout the world that bring your progress to a hard stop. These aren't obstacles you can fight or force your way past. Clearing corruption requires a specific ability called Mether's Breath, and obtaining it takes a bit of deliberate effort before it becomes available to you.

Step 1: Understand what Mether's Breath does

Mether's Breath is a special ability that, once unlocked, allows you to approach corrupted barriers and dissolve them, revealing hidden paths and opening areas that were previously inaccessible. The game's own description puts it plainly: it cleanses corruption, uncovering routes that would otherwise remain permanently blocked. It is added to your beacon menu once you have earned it, and from that point on, fast travelling between beacons and clearing corruption becomes a straightforward process.

Step 2: Gather Ova by cleansing beacons

To unlock Mether's Breath, you need to add enough Ova to Marrow Keep. Ova is the resource earned by cleansing beacons out in the world. Not every beacon will need cleansing; if a beacon is already in a clean state, no action is required. If a beacon is corrupted, the option to cleanse it will appear at the top of the beacon menu when you interact with it.

The amount of Ova each beacon yields varies. Standard beacons typically reward one or three Ova upon cleansing. However, cleansing a beacon immediately after defeating a major boss is significantly more lucrative, often rewarding twenty or more Ova in a single go. If you're trying to unlock Mether's Breath as quickly as possible, prioritising boss encounters and cleansing their associated beacons straight after is the most efficient path.

Based on firsthand experience, Mether's Breath unlocks after adding ten Ova to Marrow Keep, though it's possible a lower total may be sufficient depending on your route through the game. Ten is a safe target to aim for.

Step 3: Use Mether's Breath to clear corruption

Once the ability is in your beacon menu, clearing corruption is simple. Travel to any area where a corrupted wall is blocking your path, approach it, and hold X on a PlayStation controller. The corruption will dissolve, and the path beyond will open. From this point forward, any blocked route you previously had to leave behind can be revisited and cleared at your leisure.

Quick tip: Make a mental note of any corrupted paths you encounter before you have Mether's Breath. Once the ability is unlocked, you can fast travel back to the nearest beacon and clear them without having to retrace a long route on foot.
