Almost every weapon in Mortal Shell 2 follows a straightforward acquisition loop: buy a map from Merrick, follow the marker to a dungeon, fight your way through it, and collect the weapon at the end. The Axe and Dagger breaks from that pattern just enough to trip you up. The dungeon exists and is clearly indicated on the map near the Mushroom Village beacon, but when you arrive at the chapel housing it, the door is chained shut with a Chapel Key required and no indication of where that key might be. The answer involves backtracking past the beacon and following a path that feels unrelated until it suddenly isn't.
Step 1: Pass the Mushroom Village beacon and cross the bridge
Fast travel to the Mushroom Village beacon if you have it unlocked, or make your way there on foot. Once you're at the beacon, do not head toward the chapel yet. Instead, continue past the beacon in a straight direction until the path takes you over a bridge. Keep going after the bridge and you will soon hear and then see a group of enemies gathered around a large bonfire ahead. These are granny-type enemies, and several of them are moving around the fire. One of them is notably playing an accordion, which is either charming or deeply unsettling depending on your disposition. Either way, they need to go.
Step 2: Clear the area and find the gate
Engage and defeat all the enemies around the fire. Once the area is clear, look to the right of the bonfire while facing it. There is a gate in that direction. Pass through the gate and keep your attention on the fire as you do so.
Step 3: Walk through the illusion and take the key
As you pass through the gate with the bonfire in view, an illusion will appear in the space ahead of you, revealing a stone statue that was not visible before. Approach the statue, and you will find a key hanging from its hand. Pick it up. This is the Chapel Key.
Step 4: Return to the chapel and collect the weapon
With the Chapel Key in your inventory, head back to the chapel near Mushroom Village. Interact with the chained door, confirm you want to use the key, and the door will open. Work your way through the dungeon inside, and the Axe and Dagger weapon waits for you at the end of it.
Quick tip: Clear every enemy around the bonfire before looking for the gate. The granny enemies can be disruptive mid-exploration, and the last thing you want is one catching you off guard while you're examining a statue for a key.
