Haemimont Games created a few tougher fights in Jagged Alliance 3 and saving Biff Apscott at the Hill Station is one of them.
The merc will ask for help as The Major is sending troops to annihilate him and you can rush there to save him in sector A8. When you get to Hill Station, you will need to fight a ton of enemies and possibly some frenemies off.
Preparation
The first thing you want to keep in mind is that if you intercept the Legion squad going there, you will have fewer waves to worry about in the big battle. Therefore, it is highly important to intercept them in time.
You will also want to have at least two long-range mercs with high marksmanship to place them on top of the billboard in the middle of the area. These can be two snipers, a mix of one sniper and one machine gunner or ideally - a machine gunner and two snipers.
Once you reach A8, the wave countdown will not start until you come close to Biff. This will give you all the time you need to loot everything in the area and place your mercs in favourable positions. It also allows you to bring in more than just one squad of mercs - it's better to have 10 guns than six, right?
After placing the long-range shooters at the billboard, you will need to spread the rest of your forces out across the two flanks as the enemy waves will come from the direction of the diner and others will arrive near the cabins.
The fight
Enemy squads that come from the cabin side will often take shots at Biff, who is not smart enough to get in cover. The important part is not to save him but rather win the fight overall. Keep your mercs as safe as possible but try to avoid sending them prone because enemies will call in bombardment and you will need all the AP available to get out of the zone.
The first two waves are fairly easy and the mercs from the billboard will take out most of them. Mop up whatever is left with your flank defenders and get ready for the third wave, which is probably the toughest one.
If you didn't visit Pantagruel beforehand and made friends with the communists, Chimurenga will appear with a squad. If you don't persuade Biff to give him the green emerald, you will have to fight them as well. Sometimes, they will be able to kill Biff so you can just loot him afterwards to get the diamond yourself.
The third wave of Legion will appear after the conflict with Chimurenga is resolved and you just need to beat them down, the same way as the first two waves. If they call in artillery on the billboard, place your mercs at the far edges of the platform, there is no need to go down as the shells will miss them anyway.
If Biff survived the fight, he will attempt to leave with the diamond. You can let him do it or you can shoot him and get the diamond for yourself. The other M.E.R.C. members will not turn hostile and will just leave on their own. The diamond can be cashed in for $50,000 or given to Emma for her museum and you will get three militia deployments in return.
