Gale is the living artillery in Baldur's Gate 3 - he will wreak havoc on your enemy but you should keep him out of their range because he is pretty squishy.
That said, Gale's biggest bane is either the adventurers' lack of mindfulness or the adventurer's spirit as the character is very easy to miss.

You can recruit Gale immediately after the nautiloid crashes, with Shadowheart probably being the only companion you will have recruited up to that point.
He can be found just outside the ship, slightly to the north but there is a catch.
You will not meet Gale himself initially but a waypoint that is behaving erratically.
Interact with it and go through the dialogue options until a human arm comes out of it. Choose to help yank it out of the portal and you will have to go through a Strength check (DC 7).
Once he is out of the stone, Gale will actually be quite eager to join your party but there is one more quirk. He will require a magic item to consume periodically, for a total of three magic items that you will lose in order to keep him in the party.
He will eventually explain why and what is happening to hm but trust us - the item sacrifice is well-worth the firepower this walking nuke brings to the table.
