Even though the announcement of Borderlands 3 featured much more than we bargained for, or much less depending on how you look at things, the reaction to Gearbox's statement that it won't have battle royale was nothing short of priceless.

It's not every day that you get a game announcement along with a magic show, but to be fair - Gearbox did want to throw a show - and a show it was.

The reaction of Gearbox's fans who have gathered at PAX East 2019, once the company mentioned battle royale said it all  - people are getting increasingly sick of everyone hopping aboard the BR train.

Not that they're sick of battle royale, mind you, as Apex Legends readily proved that a well-made game can always carve out space for itself. It's just that every company seems to be going that way and it's getting really old, really fast.

"Battle royale games are fun. But that's not what we're making", said the company's resident magician Randy Pitchford. Needless to say - the cheers that followed are worthy of a king.

Of course, we're yet to see whether Borderlands 3 will be announced again on 03 April 2019 or we're looking at a reveal, but it stands to reason it's the latter, especially since Pitchford mentioned that they've been working on it for five years now.

What you can be confident of is that Gearbox aren't going for battle royale, and they'll stay true to the role-playing shooter formula that characterises the franchise.

Nevertheless, battle royale games are all the rage these days, quite understandably so. They can be team-based without being overly strict in team composition, and games do not suffer when players quit, which isn't the case in team-based shooters like Overwatch.

Another undeniable appeal of battle royale games is that they rake in some silly dough, and their share in the market is only going to grow.

Nevertheless, Gearbox will be sticking to their guns in Borderlands 3. Which is actually more than one billion guns, as its trailer is quick to remind.
