Not that it wasn't obvious that Microsoft and Playground Games have quite the driving title in Forza Horizon 4 but the sales numbers are quite impressive for a game that's available via the former's subscription service Game Pass.
According to VGChartz's data, Forza Horizon 4 sold 223,134 units in the US and 194,885 in Europe. This makes for a 46-41 per cent split, with only 2,063 copies selling in Japan, which isn't enough to account for 1 per cent.
Playground's decision on Forza Horizon 4's UK setting not only imbued the instalment with "tone and personality", it showed on the numbers too, with the UK absolutely leading the way with 70,938 units sold. Germany and France sold 34,117 and 30,038 units.
Interestingly, Forza Horizon 4's retail sales are doing better than its predecessor Forza Horizon 3, a feat not many recently launched titles can boast. More and more people are going full digital, even if physical copies are likely to retain a cult following.
For instance, Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, which launched in the same week, moved 1,401,405 copies, which is 121,015 or 8 per cent less than what Origins managed. Ubisoft hurried in its defense, claiming that its first week sales have actually set a new franchise high, suggesting that many more fans went digital this time.
Similarly, FIFA 19, which launched a week earlier, saw slower sales than FIFA 18, even though its second-week performance was still enough to fend off competition from freshly launched Forza Horizon 4 and Assassin's Creed: Odyssey.
In spite of this trend, Forza Horizon 4 outperformed its predecessor by 62,628 units. Forza Motorsport 7's figures of 210,008 sold in the first week look measly in comparison and Playground's game is likely to speed by its numbers soon, if it hasn't already.
Microsoft said that Forza Horizon 4's first week saw 2 million players, which means that around 1.5 million users played it via Microsoft's Game Pass service and sheds more light on its digital-physical split.
