Even though we've all heard about Assassin's Creed: Odyssey's physical first week physical sales falling short of Origins, Ubisoft have another tale to tell - Odyssey has set the record first sales for the franchise in this gen of consoles.
Of course, physical sales are barely a measure of anything in this digital time and age so it's perfectly understandable that including digital sales offsets Assassin's Creed: Odyssey's scale somewhat seriously. When we say scale, we mean the UK physical sales chart, which saw Odyssey in second place, behind FIFA 19.
Nevertheless, Ubisoft hurried into Alexios and Kassandra's defence, claiming they've been "humbled by the amazing reception from critics and players" alike. The hopes are apparently running so high that the company are expecting Odyssey to be one of all-time performers in the Assassin's Creed stable, an expectation that Ubisoft derived from game reviews and player reactions.
Ubisoft's senior vice president of sales and marketing Geoffroy Sardin said, "Launch is just the start of this epic journey. We have robust content plans for Assassin's Creed: Odyssey that will keep players engaged and exploring the beautiful and compelling world for a long time to come."
Indeed, the company announced extensive post-launch content coming for Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, although most of it is tied to the season pass. We're talking about episodic content in two overarching storylines. The first one is Legacy of The First Blade and it's about the first assassin to take up the famed blade, and The Fate of Atlantis, which should be enough of an explanation in and of itself.
There will be free content too, again episodic, kicking off with The Lost Tales of Greece, which has series of quests featuring both new and familiar faces from the franchise. This Assassin's Creed: Odyssey's DLC will be peppered among the paid DLC episodes, which will perhaps be even more convenient for the season pass holders than for the free playing masses. Of course, there will be recurring game events as well.
