Warhammer 40,000 franchise has countless fans but it's hard to imagine a single one of them could have seen this announcement coming.
Out of all the things I didn't expect to see during Warhammer Skulls, I didn't expect a boomer shooter the most. And yet, here it is, at least in the form of an announcement and a trailer.
Don't mistake the inability to comprehend the announcement as hate as I can't wait to get my hands on the wild shooter that is going to cause nostalgia left and right.
From what we could see in the trailer, this is an FPS ode to the '90s where we assume the role of an Astartes that's trekking across the galaxy to battle his traitorous brethren and daemons alike.
Even though the graphics are leaning into the retro style with a low pixel count, the action looks just as visceral as any in modern-day 40K titles. Besides the regular bolter shots, which have visible explosions on impact, we also get to see some chainsword action. This is true to the Space Marine action and it's highly reminiscent of the chainsaw from DOOM, which kicked off the FPS craze more than two decades ago.
That said, one of the listed features on Steam is that the game is "blending stylish visuals with fluid, modern FPS gameplay" so it's highly likely younger generations will find it easy to pick up as well, instead of just relying on the old guard of FPS games.
