Valve have posted a public apology for the early leaking of the Street Fighter V trailer, which ended up showing the new characters ahead of time. With everyone knowing they're E. Honda, Poison and Lucia, Valve said it won't happen again.
Apparently, Capcom were keeping the characters under wraps so as to make a big announcement at this weekend's Evo tournament, but it simply wasn't to be.
Valve ended up posting the Street Fighter V trailer early, showcasing the three fighters, and while it's not exactly a tragedy, spoiling Capcom's surprise reserved for the fighting game tournament isn't exactly a minor slip-up either.
Director of Capcom esports Michael Martin tweeted, "Unfortunately, yesterday got spoiled for a lot of fans and Capcom staff who put a ton of work coming into Evo. Super disappointing. That same staff worked hard last minute to put out all the trailers for E. Honda, Lucia, and Poison."
Street Fighter V producer Yoshinori Ono retweeted the above, adding, "Today I don't feel like doing anything", so the slip-up obviously hurt.
Valve confirmed that it was their error that revealed the Street Fighter V characters early, claiming it was a mix-up in the publishing process.
"It's a regrettable and unintentional situation, and we have already implemented measures to prevent this error from happening again. We are fans of Street Fighter ourselves and we're sorry for the error", they wrote.
So, what was intended to be a short-fuse surprise is more like a lengthy heads up, but we know that that E. Honda, Lucia and Poison will be released tomorrow, on Sunday, 04 August 2019. Capcom will soon be following it up with a Summer 2019 character bundle, which will include each of the characters' battle costumes and colour options.
Valve are no strangers to slip-ups when it comes to their platform, but not when it comes to leaks. In fact, they've proven to be quite airtight in that respect and it took years and Sherlock Holmes-style investigations by the most persistent to dig up stuff like screenshots. Until now that is.
