Pelikan13's The TakeOver beat 'em up went out of Early Access recently but it's possible the game remained overlooked by many players who would enjoy it while waiting for Streets of Rage 4.
The TakeOver is a sidescrolling beat 'em up game that features four characters, obviously inspired by the classics such as Streets of Rage and Final Fight. It had a stint in Steam Early Access but the game fully released on 10 November 2019. While it gathered positive impressions, the lack of overall buzz in the media indicates many players may have not noticed it came up.
Pelikan13 confirmed the inspirations on The TakeOver's Steam page but also emphasised the gameplay style focuses more on combos that can be chained together rather than regular hit and run kicks or punches.
Keeping up with the beat 'em up fashion, each character can use firearms as well but they don't pick these up from the ground. Instead, each character has a unique gun and ammo can be found for them, although it's scarce.
Those who played the game so far couldn't resist offering praise for the art style, regardless of whether their Steam review was positive or negative. As you can see in the trailer, the game doesn't seem much different from the other sidescrolling beat 'em ups in format but the high-resolution character sprites definitely stand out.
The TakeOver's story progresses through comic book cutscenes which are another thing people with '90s nostalgia might appreciate. While the system requirements are definitely more advanced than those at the turn of the millennium, they aren't high and even modern low-end rigs should be able to run the game.
