In a recent interview, Starfield lead designer Emil Pagliarulo revealed that the game's story will focus heavily on the religious themes and may even influence players in unexpected ways.

Starfield lead designer Emil Pagliarulo has talked to Polygon recently about Starfield's story and religious themes that are present in the game.

Pagliarulo explained in detail what players can expect from the story in terms of different religions and religious themes, confirming that Bethesda ended up creating two religions for the game in addition to all the existing religions that are in the world today.

One of the religions is called Sanctum Universum, which is a sort of church that believes that humans exploring the universe is a sign that God exists and wants humans to be closer to him.

Additionally, there's an atheist church called Enlightened believing that there is no higher intelligence in the universe. Pagliarulo reveals that during the development of Starfield, he flip-flopped from agnostic to atheist at least five times, suggesting that Starfield's story may have an unexpected impact on players and how they see religion.

"I've flip-flopped from agnostic to atheist probably five times in the course of making this game. That’s why both views are represented in the game."

Starfield is a big game so a 1000+ pages guide is certainly necessary
Starfield will throw some serious questions at you right from the get go

Furthermore, on their journey, players will meet various characters and one of these characters will be Matteo, a young theologian in the Constellation that strongly believes artefacts are a sign of higher intelligence or a god.

Bethesda will try to make players think about these religious aspects in Starfield by introducing them to the characters that will have different opinions on the matter.

To us, this sounds like Bethesda are going all in with narrative and deep storytelling in Starfield, which will be music to many fans' ears after Fallout 4, which arguably disappointed many fans with its story and narrative.
