It's not the exclusivity deal with Sony, it's not the actual game, it's the "challenging" reviews said Square Enix when talking about reasons for Forspoken's sales performance, which they describe as lacklustre.
The publisher released a document where they outlined the financial results of their titles, including the recently released Forspoken from Luminous Productions.
"Reviews of Forspoken which we released on January 24, 2023, have been challenging," Square Enix say in the document. "...sales have been lacklustre, and while the performance of new titles with February and March release dates will be the ultimate determinant, we see considerable downside risk to our FY2023/3 earnings."
Forspoken launched as a console launch exclusive for PlayStation 5. The game was criticised for its poor writing and main protagonist as well as its bland open world. However, it did receive some praise, mostly for its parkour and combat mechanics.
Square Enix confirmed previously that Forspoken is a console exclusive to PlayStation 5 for at least two years so it remains to be seen if the game releases on other platforms after the exclusivity deal expires.
All in all, this is certainly not a surprising scenario since Forspoken could never really catch a break before its release. First off, we got the downgrade talk, then the demo wasn't the best and it seems that the players would rather wait a couple of weeks for other major releases like Dead Space and Hogwarts Legacy, than play Square Enix's new adventure.
