According to the latest reports, multiple parties are currently actively looking at acquiring Square Enix. Microsoft and Sony are reportedly among the potential buyers.
Bloomberg Japan report that multiple potential buyers are interested in acquiring Japanese developer Square Enix, the studio behind many beloved franchises such as Final Fantasy, Nier and Kingdom Hearts III.
However, at the moment it is not clear whether the game department is the only one of interest or the company as a whole.
According to rumours, Sony and Microsoft are among the interested parties. Industry insider Nick Baker aka Shpeshal Ed revealed that both companies are one of the potential buyers.
Sadly the details about other interesting parties are pretty scarce at the moment. The Bloomberg report does not reveal any names but you can bet Chinese giant Tencent are also one of the interested companies.
Square Enix would certainly be huge scope for all these mentioned parties, especially Sony, who have been very close to the Japanese studio over the last several years. It would also be a great response to Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda.
According to Bloomberg data, Square Enix's digital entertainment business accounted for 72 per cent of total revenue in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2020, and this is probably the main reason for the interest from multiple parties.
All in all, it will be interesting to see how this one pans out over the coming months but we doubt any breaking news is imminent and it may take a while before we hear more regarding the acquisition.
