FromSoftware are famous for notoriously difficult games and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is no different, which ended up sparking a debate on whether games should have easy modes. God of War director Cory Barlog insists his vision comes first.
You've probably heard the debate by now in some shape or form, since it seems to follow FromSoftware's releases - some people want the option to play on easy, and not how the dev wanted.
Unfortunately for those interested in getting a free pass in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, a single and unforgiving difficulty is something FromSoftware don't seem to be willing to compromise on.
Barlog agrees for the most part, although we'd probably do well to clarify something that's probably made this discussion longer than it should've been - the difference between accessibility and difficulty.
"No the God of War guy is most defintely NOT equating accessibility with easy mode. Im talking about the whole host of options we as developers can put in the game - which does NOT impact difficulty - to allow for more people to play the game", he said in one of his tweets.
So basically, if there's something you could do to help on a technical level to help make the game more accessible, Barlog is all for it. Difficulty, on the other hand, is about a creator's vision.
And when it comes to FromSoftware's creative vision, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is right where they want it, which is in line with their other notoriously difficult titles.
The feeling of beating FromSoftware's games is one that has given way to numerous memes, such is the impact and payout of their games. Ultimately, actual fans are wondering why would anyone want to change something that's such a huge piece of the studio's philosophy.
While we can't say that we've ever fired up an easy mode in games, we can't say we'd be overly sad if it was removed from just about any game out there. However, taking an action towards forcing someone to do so, be it removing or adding, does seem like crossing the line a bit.
