Shadow of the Tomb Raider is getting review bombed due to a sale

Square Enix have decided to put Shadow of the Tomb Raider on a 34 per cent sale, barely a month after the game was released. This didn't click well with many players who originally bought it at full price, which resulted in review bombing.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider went on sale on 15 October 2018, with 34 per cent discount on the regular version and 47 per cent off the Croft Edition that includes the DLC pass. This resulted in players who pre-ordered or paid full price just one month prior to lash out and spam negative reviews on the game's Steam page.

Initially, Shadow of the Tomb Raider had generally favourable reviews, but it stands at a mixed rating at the time of writing, with 67 positive reviews in total. Most of the freshly added negative reviews simply state the dubious move of Square Enix putting the game up for sale so soon after launch, but others do state that the game still has audio bugs and crashes that came with the latest update.

According to , many reviews are coming from all over the world, but the vast majority are from Chinese players. They have even provided a link to a Reddit thread with translations of several insults coming from the Chinese audience, but the thread has been removed since.

Considering that Shadow of the Tomb Raider was released on 14 September 2018, such a discount could mean that the sales are well below expectations and Square Enix are trying to pump them up with discounts. If it happened to be the Holiday Season, no one would bat an eye, but slashing the price in the middle of October is pretty ominous.

On top of that, Shadow of the Tomb Raider physical copies have sold poorly, going down 70 per cent, compared to the 2013 reboot. Low physical sales are normal these days, but an increase in digital sales usually make up the difference. This doesn't seem to be the case with the latest title in the franchise, since the count is dropping faster than Raid-sprayed flies.
