Eidos Montreal have showcased the co-op mode that's been included in the upcoming Shadow of the Tomb Raider expansion The Forge. Along with the two-player co-op gameplay, we get a glimpse of interesting locations and a new challenge tomb.
Square Enix's first expansion for the Shadow of the Tomb Raider is releasing in a couple of days along with the two player co-op mode that's been showcased in the latest developer diary video. Eidos Montreal got into detail about the new feature, saying that the main goal of the expansion was to build a world that can be enjoyed solo and with a friend.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider gameplay director Vincent Monnier said they took timing and space as their design path for the co-op. "You can be at two different spaces at the same time, we want players to have cooperation and to have choices so we built the tombs around that," Monnier explained.
The trailer highlights two players working their way through the tomb with one player activating the doors and puzzles for the other. The developer also mentioned communication with pings that can be set on the key spots in the tomb so players can show each other what they need to do in order to progress.
Eidos is looking to return to the roots of Tomb Raider games with co-op, as the mode is nothing like traditional multiplayer games and will rather focus on gameplay in which players will act smart and help each other along the way. "It's not about shooting the stuff together or overcoming enemies but being smart together and coming back to the heart of what Tomb Raider is," Eidos confirmed.
The Forge DLC is first of seven monthly content packs and will provide players with new story content, challenge tombs and co-op experiences. It's not the first time Eidos have included co-op in the Tomb Raider series, with the previous entry, Rise of the Tomb Raider also testing two players in a survival mode called Endurance.
