Until now Psyonix has been addressing its Rocket League community etiquette issue with a mute and report system. That approach will now be supplemented by robots. Actually, it's just an auto-ban system based on certain words deemed inappropriate by the developers.

The Rocket League playerbase has grown to 34 million users, and with such numbers the task of maintaining sportsmanship and general politeness across the entire community can be a difficult one.

In order to maintain the highest standards of excellence for the discourse taking place during Rocket League matches Psyonix has been using a mute and report style system. Turns out, most of the reports the team was getting via the system were related to abusive language. While a minor irritation to some, we can see why this would be off-putting to a lot of players, and Psyonix have the right to define and enforce rules of conduct in their own game.

Since specific words can be filtered out with relative ease, the studio has decided to automate their ban-hammer to a certain extent.

"While we have an initial list of over 20 words and variants, this list (which we will not be making public) will continue to evolve over time, and include words and phrases from multiple languages. Each word has its own threshold, and once a threshold for any word has been reached, that player will be automatically subject to a ban. These bans will typically start at 24 hours, then escalate to 72 hours, one week, and finally, a permanent ban", the developers .

People in general and espacialy gamers will always find ways to fling insults at one another. It won't be long before an arms race escalates between creative trash-talkers and the ever expanding list of ban-worthy expressions.

We are looking forward to Psyonix eventually posting some stats on how the new system performs.
