The sequel to the indie rougelike hit Risk of Rain will be getting an additional dimension in order to accommodate third person shooter style gameplay. Development is in its very early stages and a full release is still some years away.

Risk of Rain started as a student project back in 2013. The roguelike platformer was quite a success on PC and was later ported to the PlayStation 4 and Vita.  Hopoo Games have now announced a sequel.

"Risk of Rain 2 is our first fully 3D project! We think that 3D allows for much deeper design spaces and more possibilities for cool gameplay. Feelings of scale and atmosphere are also much stronger. We are really happy with the core of Risk of Rain - and we’re finding it plays even better in 3D", reads the on the studio's blog.

The project is still in its very early stages, with about six months of work done so far. This means that the actual release lies somewhere further in the future. The developers have promised upcoming devblog entires to focus on some of the systems already in place for the game, and hope that transparency in the development process, along with the switch to 3D, will help make the best game possible.
