According to games retailer GameStop, Sony will no longer provide full game digital download codes to third-party retailers. Starting on 01 April 2019, digital codes will be available for purchase only on the official PlayStation Store.

If you are one of those people who prefer to buy their digital games codes for a bit lower price, through third-party retailers such as GameStop or CDkeys rather than paying full $60 on PlayStation Store, you will be disappointed to hear that Sony will no longer offer digital codes to such stores.

According to GameStop Store, they received a memo from Sony in which the publisher makes it clear that they will no longer provide full game digital download codes to them or any other third party retailers. Starting 01 April 2019, PlayStation 4 digital games will only be available straight from PSN while third-party stores will get to sell some add-on content and PSN cards.

If you already pre-ordered some games from GameStop or other stores, the memo states that all players who pre-ordered a game that is releasing after 01 April 2019 should be encouraged by the store to switch their pre-order to a physical version of the game.

The only two exceptions are the upcoming titles Mortal Kombat 11 and Days Gone. The digital versions of these two games will be available for sale in GameStop stores for only one week after their respective release dates. Those who pre-ordered digital versions of Mortal Kombat 11 or Days Gone will get their copies if the pre-order is made at least one week before the launch.

The memo also explains that if players have any questions about the changes to Sony's policy that will no longer provide third-party stores with digital codes, they should contact Sony directly for the clarification.

It's safe to say that many players will be displeased with Sony decision for a couple of reasons. The first one is an obviously higher price at PlayStation Store and the second one is gifting games feature that is yet to be implemented on Sony's store and it just makes buying games digitally for friends or family an unnecessary issue.

This is yet to be officially confirmed by Sony, but it shouldn't take long before we get the answer as 01 April 2019 is just around the corner.
