Osmotic Studios and Surprise Attack Games are working on a second season of the acclaimed series. Orwell: Ignorance is Strength was among other things inspired by the rise of fake news. The game will be available for PC, Mac and Linux.
Osmotic Studios and Surprise Attack Games just announced Orwell: Ignorance is Strength is coming soon. This will be a follow up to the surveillance thriller that "explores power and democracy in a post-truth world". Orwell: Ignorance is Strength will act as the second season to the surveillance thriller, Orwell.
Orwell: Ignorance is Strength was inspired by "the rise of fake news, the social media echo chamber and the death of “truth”- [the game] places the player in the shoes of a government official in a top-secret department of the Orwell program". The story kicks off after "a political crisis [arises] across borders, threatening to plunge The Nation and Parges into violent civil unrest".
The player will have to decide "how far they will go in the service of their country and whether the truth is sacred or ignorance is strength" the press release informs us.
Ignorance is Strength's predecessor - Orwell: Keeping an Eye on You , was released as a weekly episodic series back in October and November 2016. It is a surveillance thriller set in a fictional country called The Nation. The player had to use the Orwell surveillance program in order to dig into the private and public communications of suspects in a series of terrorist attacks. The centrepiece of the game was the question - "What would you do if you were Big Brother?"
Orwell was both a commercial and a critical success, winning multiple awards and receiving prestigious nominations including the IGF Excellence in Narrative and an Honorable Mention in the IGF Seamus McNally Grand Prize.
Orwell: Ignorance is Strength will take place "parallel to the events of the first season but this time the player takes on the role of an insider with access to additional features of the Orwell program".
Orwell: Ignorance is Strength will be launching soon as a weekly episodic series for PC, Mac and Linux.
