According to Huw Beynon from Deep Silver, Metro Exodus is ready to take on Far Cry New Dawn and Crackdown 3 which are releasing on the same day as 4A game's title. He said that Metro Exodus is a serious and mature story-driven experience.
It doesn't happen often that three big-name titles are releasing on the same day. Metro Exodus, Far Cry New Dawn and Crackdown 3 all share 15 February 2019 as their launch date. But that isn't something that concerns Huw Beynon from Metro Exodus' publisher Deep Silver.
Beynon, who is Deep Silver's head of global brand management said that Metro trilogy finale will find its audience in mature and serious gamers who love a good story and single-player experience.
"For me, the natural audience for this game are people who have enjoyed things like Horizon: Zero Dawn, or something like a Witcher - grown-up, mature, serious single-player, story-driven experience," Beynon said in a gamesindustry.biz interview.
He also said that Metro Exodus isn't comparable with Ubisoft's Far Cry New Dawn which also features a post-apocalyptic setting. "You could say maybe that Far Cry is a competitor because it's also post-apocalyptic, but I think that's quite a shallow comparison," Beynon explained.
Some would take his words as a dig at Ubisoft's title but Huw has a point to some degree. Games may share some similar gameplay mechanics but the setting, story and overall mood of Metro Exodus couldn't be more contrasting from Far Cry's.
Deep Silver
When asked about the franchise in general, Beynon talked about the first game - Metro 2033 which had "an absolutely minuscule budget" and very low expectations. But the game went on to become a "cult hit" and the sequel Metro: Last Light has followed in "phenomenal" way even though it launched during the difficult period when Deep Silver took over from THQ.
The franchise's progress is best shown in Metro Exodus' reveal which happened during Microsoft's E3 2017 press conference which Beynon describes as "a massive boost" for Deep Silver.
The publisher fully expects that the last game in the trilogy performs better than its predecessors even with the crowded release date. "I would be extremely surprised if it didn't perform better than the previous ones," Beynon concluded.
