Total War developer Creative Assembly have detailed everything that is coming in next big Total War: Three Kingdoms update. Patch 1.4.0 is set to arrive on Thursday, 16 January 2020 and it brings a ton of new and free content including new units, faction, mechanics and a lot more. Here are the highlights of the patch 1.4.0:

  • The introduction of Tao Qian as a playable character
  • Lu Zhi, Huangfu Song, Diao Chan, and Xun Yu are all now legendary characters
  • New battle features and abilities, including deployables and siege engines
  • Emperor ownership and rank mechanics updates
  • Unit, weapon, and projectile balance changes to promote new battlefield roles
  • Various bug fixes

The biggest addition is certainly the new character Tao Qian. He is available in both 182 CE and 190 CE start dates and has a unique faction mechanic named Displaced Population. This pooled resource is increased by the conflicts (specifically sieges) going on around China, the actions of all factions will contribute to this not just your own.

Tao Qian also gets access to two new units - Territorial Spearmen and Territorial Archers. These units are available for recruitment and also appear in his settlements and garrisons, allowing him to better defend his territory. Both these units receive combat bonuses when they are on the defending side in a battle.

On top of these additions, four existing characters are being upgraded to legendary characters. Lu Zhi, Huangfu Song, Diao Chan, and Xun Yu will appear with unique artwork in campaign and battles and are also accessible in custom and multiplayer battles.

The update also brings new battle features such as Defensive Towers, Wooden Stakes and Deployable Oil and you can read about these and many other features in the full blog post .
