With a large majority of the League of Legends esports season now complete, we’re quickly coming into the Worlds 2025 bubble. The biggest tournament of the year is just around the corner, and will see the strongest teams from every region converge in the hopes of claiming Summoner’s Cup glory.
This year’s tournament will take place across 3 major cities in China. The Play-In Stage and Swiss Stage will be held in Beijing, with the Knockout Stage moving to Shanghai and the Grand Finals set to take place in Chengdu.
Riot made some changes, so the tournament will see 17 squads compete through the various stages, with the action starting on the 14th of October, 2025. Here’s everything you need to know about the schedule, format, and teams involved.
Worlds 2025 Format
LoL Esports’ World Championship Worlds 2025 will retain the three-stage format from the last few years: Play-In Stage, Swiss Stage, and Knockout Stage.
Play-In Stage
This year’s Play-In Stage will feature just two teams battling it out in a best-of-five: Invictus Gaming (LPL #4) and T1 (LCK #4, 2023 World champions). Their series will begin on October 14, with the winner progressing to the Swiss Stage.
Swiss Stage
The Swiss Stage kicks off on October 15. Sixteen teams are split into three tiers:
- Tier 1: Five #1 seeds (GEN, BLG, G2, FLY, CFO)
- Tier 2: Five #2 seeds + Play-In region’s #3 seed
- Tier 3: Remaining
Round 1 of the Swiss Stage will be a mix of:
- Tier 1 vs Tier 3
- Tier 2 vs Tier 2
The Swiss Stage progresses with each team playing until they achieve three wins (to advance) or three losses (elimination). The games will run daily until October 24.
Knockout Stage
The eight teams in the Quarterfinals (Oct. 28–31) will be seeded by their overall record, with the 3-0 Swiss Stage finishers facing off against the 3-2 teams. The other teams will be drawn based on their performance.
