The 2025 League of Legends World Championship (Worlds 2025) is the most significant event of the competitive season and will feature the top teams from around the globe.
The Riot's 2025 tournament iteration will be hosted in China and will introduce some significant format changes, including a new qualification system.
Although many of the details are still being worked out, here’s an overview of what we know so far.
Tournament format and structure
Worlds 2025 will see 17 teams fighting it out in three intense stages.
Stage 1: Play-In
- Two squads compete in a best-of-five series.
- The winner advances to the next round.
Stage 2: Swiss Stage
- 16 teams play in this round (15 qualifying teams + 1 Play-In winner).
- Uses a Swiss-style system with five rounds.
- No rematch in this round.
- Matchups are determined at the end of each round.
- Three wins secure promotion, and three losses result in elimination.
- Most matches are best-of-one, except Qualification and Elimination games, which are best-of-three.
Stage 3: Knockout Stage
- The top 8 teams proceed to a single-elimination bracket.
- All the games in this level are best-of-five.
- Prize Pool and Rewards
- The total prize pool has yet to be revealed, but Riot should offer a huge reward pool for top-performing teams. The breakdown of the earnings will be released closer to the tournament.
Qualified teams and regional representation
Teams will earn qualification through merit in their regions, with any remaining places determined by performance in the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI).

Key changes for Worlds 2025
- Americas and APAC are merged into two giant regions, with three teams from each.
- The MSI Champion gets an automatic qualification but must make domestic playoffs to secure their spot.
- If the MSI runner-up's region performs well, they may be rewarded with an extra Worlds spot.
Expected schedule
Though Riot has not revealed the exact starting date, the tournament will likely follow a comparable schedule to previous years:
- Play-In Stage: September 2025
- Swiss Stage: Late September - Early October 2025
- Knockout Stage: Mid-October 2025
- Grand Finals: Late October - Early November 2025
