League of Legends receives another overhaul to its loot system through Riot Games' introduction of the Epic Skin Chest.
The new feature provides an affordable method to acquire skins but many players question whether it merely adds another level of RNG to the loot-dominant client.
With Exalted Skins, Mythic Variants, Event Capsules, and other random-drop systems already in place, this latest addition raises some concerns.
What is the Epic Skin Chest?
Riot Games is currently testing a new loot chest system which players will be able to purchase directly through the game's store. The chest provides players with a random skin at the Epic level drawn from a specific themed collection.
The initial collection of skins to be released in the Epic Skin Chest will derive from the April Fools event line which showcases quirky and chaotic designs. Players will find four distinct skins in the loot table at the system's launch.
A cheaper way to get skins
The price of this system remains the most significant question for players. According to data mining results the cost may be 900 RP or below which makes these chests a more affordable option compared to the regular 1350 RP price for Epic skins.
Should the new system limit Epic-tier skins to chest availability only it would represent a significant change by subjecting these high-level cosmetics to random chance similar to Wild Rift's lootbox distribution model.
Riot might be removing direct skin purchases
The absence of individual sales for these skins by Riot could indicate their shift towards a gacha system for distributing cosmetics.
The ability for players to purchase Epic skins directly has been eliminated in favor of earning them through chest openings that involve chance-based rewards.
Zeri Icon variant
A premium version of the base Epic Skin Chest with a Zeri-themed icon is reportedly being issued by Riot. The feature may serve only as a cosmetic upgrade or it could potentially improve drop rates for players.
The KitKat event chest previously showcased similar mechanics by combining a themed reward with random item drops.
Will Epic Skins transition to Gacha-only accessibility?
The company would be abandoning its traditional approach if Riot started to restrict Epic skins to lootboxes. Players had the option to purchase Epic skins directly from the store.
The potential change prompts worry because Riot Games has recently experimented with gacha mechanics:
- Exalted skins have experienced delays while also generating mixed reactions from players.
- The acquisition of Mythic Essence depends entirely on random capsule drops.
- Your Shop discounts are entirely RNG-based
- Seasonal events are increasingly gacha-driven
Considering current patterns the Epic Skin Chest might represent the next advancement towards League of Legends' complete lootbox-based system. Only time can reveal if this development represents improvement or risky uncertainty.
