Sunny Suljic reveals how he took the criticism from Twitch streamers to change how he portrays Atreus

Actor Sunny Suljic reveals he created fake Twitch profiles to ask people what they think of his performance as Atreus in God of War Ragnarok.

Actor Sunny Suljic who plays Atreus in God of War: Ragnarök was one of the panelists on day two of MCM Birmingham Comic Con where he shared some interesting stories about his time working on the game alongside Christopher Judge who plays Kratos and Danielle Bisutti, who you know as Freya.

In an effort to refine his portrayal of Atreus for the award-winning sequel, Suljic took a very unusual approach: he created a fake profile on the popular game streaming platform Twitch to watch streamers play the God of War from 2018. He then engaged with them under an alias, asking for an honest opinion about Atreus as a character. The feedback he received, particularly from those who found Atreus "a brat," led him to adjust his performance.

“I took a lot of criticism because I made a fake on Twitch, and I would watch other streamers play God of War," Suljic said. "I would have an alias and ask: ‘So, uh, what do you think about the kid in God of War?’ And they would be like: 'Oh, he’s such a brat.’ So I transitioned my character a bit.”

While Sunny's methods might seem a bit unusual for a pro actor, it seems that it has worked to a certain degree as his portrayal of Atreus in Ragnarök received praise from fans.

I might be one of the few who didn't quite like Atreus in Ragnarok nor the sections with him as a playable character, which were my least favourite parts of the game. But, perhaps that's what the devs and actors had in mind in the first place — a more complex, perhaps even irksome, character evolution.

To be fair, Kratos was always going to be the fan-favourite character in God of War, no matter how good Suljic was

It's safe to say that Suljic's character undergoes a major most significant transformation from the first game to Ragnarök, not only because Suljic himself grew from a boy to a teenager, but also because his connection to the role evolved over time. This personal growth mirrors the deeper, more mature portrayal of Atreus in the sequel who still retains some of those annoying teenage traits that make some of us older folks shake our heads in disbelief.

Lastly, while Sunny certainly did a great job in brining Atreus to life, it’s also important to recognize Sony Santa Monica writers and their contribution to making Atreus a memorable character in the God of War series.
