Ghost of Yōtei’s latest gameplay reveals the fiery kusarigama, a powerful tool for crowd control and stylish executions. Here's everything you need to know.

Sucker Punch Productions is generating a lot of hype for its next game Ghost of Yōtei, which is set to release on October 2, 2025. A new gameplay preview for the PS5 title has been released online. It not only provides more insights into the combat system of the game, but also highlights one of the weapons that might be the game’s most interesting to use.

Sword fighting and grappling make a full return to the series, but the kusarigama is one weapon to keep your eye on. The kusarigama can grab distant enemies with its chain and hook while also cutting them down with its blade. It even has a fiery upgrade to dispatch more than one enemy at a time. The kusarigama is not in Ghost of Tsushima, but it will no doubt add a fresh twist to the combat of the next entry.

This weapon also appears to be quite visually impressive, but it also could be a legitimate tool for crowd control. Ghost of Yōtei is looking to continue the formula of the last game with fluid combat and stylish execution moves, but will also have some new tricks to add to the samurai adventure.

The Kusarigama is a sickle attached to a chain with a weighted end. In Ghost of Yōtei, it can be used to pull enemies towards you from across the battlefield before cleaning house with a series of quick and vicious finishers.

The tool can also be used to slide through downed enemies in one seamless motion, all in one fluid animation the series excels at.

Flaming Kusarigama for Crowd Control

The kusarigama takes on even more utility when it’s set on fire. Much like Ghost of Tsushima’s Way of the Flame, the weapon’s incendiary version will burn down your enemies over time while also being able to break through wooden shields.

This adds a layer of strategy to Ghost of Yōtei and gives players another way to approach bigger fights without pigeonholing them into a single playstyle.

Weapons Galore

Atsu will also have access to a large variety of weapons that includes but is not limited to the katana, odachi, yari, and dual swords. The developer’s said they’re encouraging players to experiment with switching between different tools depending on the enemies they come across-but there’s no strict necessity to do so.

This gives players flexibility in building up their own combat rhythm while still leaving room to try everything.
