More gameplay from Ghost of Yotei. This trailer from Sucker Punch dives into combat variety and companion mechanics. After yesterday’s cinematic-focused preview, today’s follows suit by putting more of a focus on Atsu’s combat, weaponization and incorporation of the wolf companion into battle. Ghost of Yotei will release October 2, exclusively for PS5.
As you can see from the video, Ghost of Yotei’s combat has a lot more variety than the first game. The protagonist Atsu uses a variety of weapons and can easily switch back and forth between them.
All while using the environment, special devices and that trusty wolf to tilt the odds in his favor. The wolf in particular is used to break up enemy lines, giving Atsu the ability to penetrate and wreak havoc with high damage attacks.
Though we focus more on the adrenaline-pumping swordplay, there is more to Ghost of Yotei’s combat system than that. Smoke bombs, distraction, and even a few well placed bullets mid-slash are all part of a very fluid and versatile combat system that’s going to ensure battles feel as fresh as possible.
Dual Blades Take Center Stage
The trailer demonstrates Atsu’s new dual blades. The weapon she wields is used to devastating effect as she hacks her way through enemy camps in flashy, fast-paced combos.
The speed and flow of the dual blades style contrasts the more methodical, single-sword katana style from Ghost of Yōtei, providing players with a high-speed option for close-range combat. With the addition of jump attacks and chained finishers, the dual blades add a new layer to Ghost of Tsushima’s melee combat system.
The Wolf’s Role in Combat
The biggest new highlight is the addition of a wolf companion, who disrupts and stuns enemies during combat. The wolf attacks are much more intentional and tactical than Atsu’s former helping hand, which gives players opportunities to further punish enemies after the wolf’s work is done.
Little information was provided about the wolf’s role in the story, but its more deliberate nature in combat suggest it will be more than just a passive pet to have along for the ride.
A Deeper Arsenal of Tools
Beyond dual blades and the wolf, the trailer also showed returning tools such as smoke bombs and throwable items to confuse and distract enemies. There’s a yari spear which makes an appearance in a stylish leap attack and even a one-handed firearm which Atsu can seamlessly incorporate into the middle of a combo.
All of these new additions to the system build off of Ghost of Yōtei’s foundation to further expand the depth of combat and the various ways a player can approach combat encounters.
