EA will no longer make official licenced FIFA games since FIFA are looking to produce their own football title, while EA will be rebranding theirs to EA Sports FC.
We've known for a while that the relationship between EA and FIFA is coming to an end after FIFA reportedly asked EA to give them more money for this valuable licence. FIFA reportedly wants around $1 billion per year but Electronic Arts feel like the FIFA name is not worth that kind of money.
EA are basically paying FIFA a lot of money for the FIFA name only since the rest of the licences which include real-world player and club names, badges and stadiums are done separately and EA have to pay additional money for that. That's why the publisher don't feel like the name only is worth it anymore.
So, what's next for EA then? Well, according to reliable Jeff Grubb, EA will continue to make football games but under a different name - EA Sports FC (Football Club). The publisher even trademarked the name last year and according to the latest reports, this is indeed the name that EA have chosen for their new football title.
MORE FIFA
- EA has removed all Russian clubs and players from FIFA 22 FUT packs
- FIFA 22 players racked up 87.8 million years of gameplay in 22 days
On the other hand, FIFA have updated their trademark in Europe to specifically add video games which could mean they are making their own football game. It's safe to assume that such a game would be titled FIFA for obvious reasons.
One thing that will be interesting to see is who will develop the next FIFA game. Perhaps 2K could jump in? Players have been asking 2K to make a proper football game for years, given their success and experience with NBA 2K franchise.
