In case you needed more proof that corporate executives don't really care much about regular folk who are working hard on their beloved projects, the former Sony president just provided some genuinely baffling comments regarding the recent layoffs in the video game industry.
Chris Deering, who was Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president, stated that recent layoffs were not a result of corporate greed, instead, it's down to failed projects which did not generate any money, which makes it hard to justify spending the money for the next game.
He added that those who lost their job in these layoffs should drive an Uber or go to a beach for a year until they find a new opportunity, as reported by Eurogamer.
"I think it's probably very painful for the managers, but I don't think that having skill in this area [of game dev] is going to be a lifetime of poverty or limitation. It's still where the action is, and it's like the pandemic but now you're going to have to take a few…figure out how to get through it, drive an Uber or whatever, go off to find a cheap place to live and go to the beach for a year. But keep up with your news and keep up with it, because once you get off the train, it's much harder," he said.
Sony shut down a total of four studios over the last several years including Manchester Studio, Japan Studio, Pixel Opus and most recently London Studio. Sony also fired over 900 people which is around 8 per cent of their gaming division workforce.
After such a massive round of layoffs one would certainly think that executives would stay silent and take the criticism from the gaming communities but it seems Deering thinks otherwise.
His comments certainly won't help and will only add fuel to the fire. I expect to see many reactions from game devs in the coming days as this statement starts spreading over on social media networks.
