Rumour has it that EA and DICE's Battlefield is going to test the battle royale waters as well and it seems like there isn't a game on this planet that isn't going PUBG and Fortnite way. Provided that the rumour is true, of course.

VentureBeat that DICE is already working on Battlefield's battle royale excursion, despite the upcoming instalment in the franchise arriving later this year.

Unfortunately, the report is very light on actual facts and the sources are said to be people with "knowledge of the studio who asked to remain anonymous". It does, however, claim that Battlefield royale is in the protoype phase.

The site says that if the prototype is deemed successful, it may be added to Battlefield V or even to Star Wars: The Old Republic. They also say that EA may just as easily abandon the idea altogether.

Speculation is ripe when it comes to battle royale genre, with Activision and Treyarch reportedly considering dumping single player and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.

Although still a rumour, it would not be a surprise if all of these games went there, what with PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Epic's Fortnite raking in them big bucks on a constant basis.

Capturing hearts and wallets of celebrities and the masses alike is an opportunity no company would refuse but all of these projects could just as well be simple tests. With no verifiable sources and/or credible proof, we might as well add Battlefield to the endlessly expanding list of games interested in the idea.

On the other hand, it is entirely possible for EA and DICE to be toying with the notion, but it's unclear what sort of prototype we'd be talking about here, For all we know, they could've modded a single map to test something internally.

Naturally, it isn't like EA to do anything for kicks, not least with Battlefield, but the company has declined to comment as of the time of writing.
