If it wasn't for the underwhelming stealth adventure Gollum, vampire shooter Redfall would be the lowest-rated game of 2023 so far. Arkane Studios' open-world title wasn't received well and no wonder, according to Bloomberg, its development wasn't smooth at all.
The report states that Redfall suffered from unclear direction, a lack of staff and frequent attrition and was developed only after parent company Bethesda encouraged their studios to try and come up with ideas for games as a service model to generate more revenue.
According to the report, the morale of the team was so low that the developers hoped that Microsoft would "cancel the project or let them reboot it as a single-player game" after they acquired the publisher.
To their disappointment, Microsoft decided to let Bethesda handle Redfall as that is their approach with the studios and publishers they acquire. Microsoft only decided to cancel the PlayStation version of the game and that's pretty much all they did in the development of Redfall.
Arkane Studios continued to work on the game, hoping that once the art is done and bugs are squashed, a familiar Arkane magic would save Redfall but that sadly didn't happen as we all know.
And while that Bloomberg article will sound like doom and gloom to many Xbox fans, there are some positives in the launch of Redfall. One, Microsoft probably won't ever allow themselves to launch such a game and two, Arkane Studios are growing and building a team for their next game, which is hopefully their signature style single-player adventure.
