Ubisoft is a French video game developer and publisher founded on 28 March 1986 by five brothers from Brittany — Christian, Claude, Gérard, Michel, and Yves Guillemot — who transitioned from their family's agricultural supply business into the growing home computer software market. Originally operating as a software distributor under the name Ubi Soft, the company pivoted to original game development in the late 1980s, with Rayman (1995) serving as the first major title to bring the studio international recognition.
Ubisoft went public on the Paris Stock Exchange in 1996, raising over $80 million to fund rapid global expansion, opening studios in Annecy, Shanghai, and Montreal within two years. The company is now headquartered in Saint-Mandé, France, and operates over 45 studios worldwide, with CEO Yves Guillemot remaining at the helm since 1988.
The studio's flagship franchise, Assassin's Creed, launched in 2007 and has since sold over 200 million units, becoming one of the best-selling video game series in history. Other major IP includes Far Cry, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six and The Division, Watch Dogs, and Rayman. In 2025, Assassin's Creed Shadows delivered one of the franchise's strongest commercial launches in years, selling over three million copies in its first week.
Ubisoft has faced significant financial pressure in recent years, reporting declining revenues in 2024 and laying off 700 employees in 2025, with the company placing increased focus on fewer, larger releases. Black Flag Resynced, a full remake of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, launches 9 July 2026.
