11 Bit Studios were good on their promise and brought us a game that is truly original. Playing The Alters is a one-of-a-kind experience, and it is a survival game that will amaze you with its approach to storytelling and definitely with its unique and very original gameplay.
The idea of cloning the alternate versions of yourself to escape a dangerous planet while struggling to get necessary resources and managing the relationships with your alters is just genius.
As much as it sounds great on paper, it is even better in realisation, but not without difficulties. If you're struggling at the beginning of the game and everything seems overwhelming to you, we bring you several tips and tricks on how to start the game properly and get the best out of it at the very beginning.
Beginner's tips and tricks
- Pay close attention to the mechanics shown in prologue
The prologue of The Alters will pretty much teach you everything you need to know about the basics of survival in this game, so make sure to pay close attention to everything the game has to say during this period.
If you miss some of the tutorials, just access the tutorial tab from the main menu and review everything there; if some mechanics are confusing to you, everything you need is just there.
- Do not worry if you miss something; you'll have to replay the game anyway to get all the story
Apart from being a survival game, The Alters features some serious RPG elements, with different choices being one of the most important ones.
Choosing differently can take your game in a completely different direction, and if you preferred a different outcome, do not worry; once the game is done, you'll have a chance to replay some of your choices and make things happen in a different way.
- Choices can be changed before the game saves
There is a catch about making choices in The Alters. If the outcome of your choices isn't according to your preferences, and you'd love to change some of your lines, simply exit the game and reload again.
The game saves only when you sleep or when the new day begins; everything you do before going to sleep can be changed if you reload the game, so use this feature if you think you could do better in some situations.
- Create a scientist as your second alter
The first alter you create will be predetermined as part of the story, and this choice isn't yours to make. However, the second alter can be chosen from several options given to you.
Our recommendation is to create a scientist because, by doing so, you'll avoid some unnecessary complications. We won't get into details and reveal spoilers; all you need to know is that choosing a scientist will make your life much easier in the future.
- Difficulty settings matter
If you find the game too hard at some points, reducing the difficulty, especially to the economy settings, is highly recommended because doing things on higher difficulty will require more time and dedication. If you're okay with that, it's your choice; you should only know that choosing different difficulty in The Alters really matters.
- Do not miss on talking to Alters when prompted
During the gameplay, you'll get a special prompt once an Alter has something to tell you. Once this happens, immediately go and talk to them because this can change very much in the story, and you can miss some very important information if you fail to do it.
- Stock up on essentials
Every time you have the opportunity to explore a new piece of the planet, go outside, find metals and organics, and make mining rigs to extract as much of those resources as possible.
Also, while you have materials, make repair kits and filters, and once the crisis hits, you'll have enough to scrape by. A poorly prepared survivor is bound to fail in his mission; be aware of this.
