Being a true survival title, The Alters features numerous survival mechanics, with gathering resources being one of the most important ones. To gather resources in this game, you'll need to first find the resource deposits, then set up the outposts to extract those resources.
Setting up the outposts might seem like an easy task, but if you don't know how to do it exactly, with the limited time pressure breathing down your neck, you could be in a serious problem.
To avoid such a fate, we've prepared a guide that will explain this mechanic thoroughly, with everything you need to do to make the most of the limited time you have been given to make the most of the given situation.
How to set up the outposts in The Alters
Exploring the planet, you'll find resources scattered all over the place, and you'll be able to gather them manually. Some of those you'll even be able to mine with your basic equipment, but if you want the unlimited source of resources, you'll need to set up the mining outposts in specific spots.
Once you find such a spot and scan the source, you'll be prompted to place a mining rig, forming an outpost. Keep in mind that you'll need to have a mining outpost in your inventory to place it in the specific place. You can create it in a workshop inside the base (unmissable as it is a part of the main story).
Set the mining outpost and use pylons to connect it to the base. Notice that as you move a pylon, it shows the maximum distance allowed between them—to save the resources, make the distance as close to zero as possible.
Once the base and the outpost are connected, you can start the gathering process. You can gather resources by working in the outpost yourself, or you can task one of your alters to do this job for you. Keep in mind, however, that you can work only during the day and must rest during the night due to higher radiation levels.
Once you decide to move from that place, retrieve the outpost and pylons to reset them again once your base stops again.
