Having a ranged weapon is pretty great in Sons of the Forest and one of the easiest to get is the Compact Pistol. Here is how to get it
Sons of the Forest has some sturdy foes that will be hard to take down up close. For that reason, you will want at least a bow but firearms are usually the most efficient ranged weapons.
Compact Pistol, chambered in 9mm, is the easiest one to acquire since you don't need any tools to reach it, only the will to walk there and a bit of courage to brave shark-infested waters.
Ammunition for it is not too hard to come by either.

From the helicopter crash site where you spawn, it will be a bit hard to spot the location of the gun on your GPS since it's quite far. Zoom out as much as possible and look for a pink exclamation mark blip that seems to be in the water. That is what you are going for.

You can simply go along the beach to your right and keep walking until you reach the part where you need to swim. If you go this way, you will also run into some beached kayaks that have some generic loot.

From the kayaks, just stick to the beach and keep moving towards the blip in the water. When you are close enough to properly see the location, you will also hear the music from a radio that has some loot around it. I would suggest you check it out - more supplies never hurt and the Pistol Rail modification can be looted. It is used to mount other modifications on the pistol.

At this point, it would be wise to whip out a Tarp and a Stick to create a save.
From the loot spot, swim directly towards the blip in the water. Don't sprint while you can walk, save the stamina for swimming. It is also advised to top off your food, water and rest meters to have as much stamina as possible.
There is a shark in the water and you need to survive it in order to reach the raft. Even if the shark kills you, there is a silver lining - you get an achievement.
When you reach the life raft, approach it from the left, which is the side you can climb it from. You will be prompted to hold the interact button (default E) to actually climb - you can't just jump on it.

Once you climb the raft, loot the gun which is located on top of a book but also loot the GPS Locator from the corpse of a soldier. You will need the locator later on if you befriend Virginia. She wanders off so it's nice to know where she is at any given time.
Now that you have looted the gun, you will see the shark is still circling the raft. You can risk it and hope to outswim the shark to the shore. Alternatively, you can shoot it with either the gun or a bow that you may have crafted beforehand.
In any case, now you have a 9mm in your pocket so it might be time to clear some caves. Good luck!
