Among many puzzles you'll encounter throughout the game, once you reach Lakeview Hotel, you'll find the very interesting one on its second floor, featuring four books and a bookshelf.

Bookshelf puzzle solution
Once you reach Lakeview Hotel, you'll eventually go upstairs to the second floor. If you check out your map, you'll see that James put a huge question mark inside the reading room. Go there, pick four books scattered around the room, and put them inside the shelf.
On one side of the room, you'll notice a huge painting with a lion, bull, eagle, and angel on it, and the man standing in the middle holding two sticks or rifles—it's really hard to recognise what they are.
Each book you picked up earlier bears one of these four signs: lion, bull, eagle, and angel; your job will be to sort them out properly to open the shelf. So, according to the logic, you should set them in the same order as they are set on the painting, and that would be true if you overlooked one small detail.
In the middle of the shelf, you can see the medallion showcasing two spears; only the spears on the medallion are turned towards each other, not away from each other like in the painting. So that's what you must do with the books as well—mix them accordingly.
If you sorted the books as they're sorted out on the painting, take the first book from the upper row and switch its place with the second one from the lower row. Now, take the second book from the first row and switch it with the first book from the second row. The order of the books should be as follows: the first row—angel and eagle, and the second row—bull and lion. Do this, and the bookshelf will open.
