One of the most well-known names to Jagged Alliance fans is Gus Tarballs, the tough merc that retired at the end of the second game and it seems like he is holding up his word in the third one. No, I am not acknowledging the spinoffs.
Anyway, Tarballs will remain "Retired" until the end of the game and seemingly nothing will convince him to un-retire.
However, you can actually contact him, despite the icon in the browser being greyed out. Even though he will normally refuse your offer without even listening to it, he can be convinced to come along.
The way to hire Gus Tarballs is to hire one or both of his favourite merc buddies beforehand - Len and Scully. If you have either of them on the roster, Tarballs will join and if you have only Len, he will also suggest hiring Scully.
Keep in mind that Gus and Len have the Old Dog trait which will prevent them from improving their stats but they are already quite competent in everything they do. That said, you can still give them magazines and improve stats that way.
With Gus and Scully in your team, everyone will become a veritable tank since the duo will keep giving them Grit through either kills or being in the Aussie's proximity.
