After many rumours and leaks which suggested that Xbox Live Gold could be going away or merging with Xbox Game Pass, today we have the official confirmation that Microsoft are indeed killing Live Gold on September 9, 2023.
This subscription service that was mandatory if you wanted to play online multiplayer titles will be replaced with a new tier of Xbox Game Pass called Core, which also brings some extra benefits.
The price will remain the same so you'll pay $9.99 monthly. Additionally, the Games with Gold promotion will be ending too as players will have access to a new catalogue of over 25 games including Forza Horizon 4, Gears 5, Doom Eternal, Fallout 4 and more.
Xbox Game Pass Core will not feature the biggest games from the Game Pass library and obviously, there won't be day-one releases for this tier either.
Here are the key Xbox Game Pass Core details:
- Starts on September 9, 2023
- Includes online multiplayer
- Live Gold subscribers will convert to Core
- Same price as Live Gold ($9.99)
- Includes a catalogue of over 25 games
- No more Games with Gold
- Games redeemed with Live Gold will remain in your library
All in all, we believe this is a smart move by Xbox as many players have been pretty unhappy with Live Gold and its games offering each month.
This will also help Microsoft add more users to the Game Pass ecosystem and potentially make some of them switch to a higher tier - Xbox Game Pass Ultimate - which is probably the company's goal with this new change.
Xbox Game Pass is having a really strong year so far with releases like Hi-FI Rush, Atomic Heart and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. Obviously, the biggest blockbusters like Forza Motorsport and Starfield are yet to release so it's safe to say that Game Pass subscribers numbers could see a massive boost in the coming months.
